Startup Session: AI Hub for Sustainable Development Co-Design

As part of the event, the Startup Session will showcase innovative African startups selected through the AI Hub for Sustainable Development Co-Design: Startup Acceleration Pilot. Running from September to October 2024, the program focuses on strengthening data, compute, and talent pipelines in Africa’s AI ecosystem. Co-led by the Italian G7 Presidency and UNDP, with support from partners like the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and INNOVIT, the initiative aims to foster sustainable, people-centered innovations.

During the “Demo Day” (Pitching Session) on 12th November, these startups will present their AI-driven solutions to potential investors and strategic partners, offering an opportunity to form collaborations, attract investment, and connect with Silicon Valley AI leaders, contributing to Africa’s transformative development through AI.

Background of the Initiative

This event builds on the G7 meetings in Verona, Trento (March 14-15, 2024) and Rome ( October 10, 2024), where Ministers of Industry, Technology, and Digital emphasized the transformative and ethical potential of emerging technologies, particularly AI. These discussions, along with the High-Level Dialogue between G7 and B7 on the Future of Industry, laid the foundation for the B7 Summit in May. Following the achievements of the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Apulia, the Italian Presidency aims to harness these technologies to enhance competitiveness, tackle industrial and scientific challenges, and extend their benefits worldwide. This effort emphasizes closer collaboration between governments and the private sector to drive innovation, increase investments, and build specialized expertise.
